July 2015 Wrap Up

Friday 31 July 2015 0 comments
Hello Book Lovers!!!

It's the end of July!!! So that means it's wrap up time again :D I've managed to read 5 books and a graffic novel this month which I'm super happy with as I've had a rather busy month. So lets get on with it!!!

The first book I read was Papertowns by John Green.

I really enjoyed this book and gave it 4* on Goodreads. It follows a boy named Quentin who goes on a car ride to find his friend Margo after she disappears one day leaving him clues to her whereabouts.

The next book I read was Dream a Little Dream by Giovanna Fletcher.

I gave this book 4* on Goodreads. A girl called Sarah works with the worst boss and one day asks for a promotion. She gets to work in the development department of her work but soon finds out the boy she has been dreaming about has also got himself a job working there.

The third book I read was Looking For Alaska by John Green.

I gave this 5* on Goodreads. Absolutely loved it!!! Favourite John Green book so far :) It follows a boy called Miles who goes away to school and meets lots of people while he is there, one being a girl called Alaska. When Alaska runs off after being on the phone to someone, the group can not begin to prepare themselves for what they are about discover.

And the fourth book I read was Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.

I gave this book 4* on Goodreads. It took me a while to get into but once I did I really enjoyed it :)
It follows the Bennett sister in their search for marriage.

The fifth book I read was The Selection by Kiera Kass.

I loved this book so much and gave it 5* on Goodreads. I couldn't get enough of this story but luckily for me there is another three books in the series. This story is about a group of girls that are competing to marry Prince Aspen, but America, one of the girls that has been chosen for the selection, is in love with Aspen, another boy from her neighbourhood.

And the final book I read was the graffic novel titled Fairest Wide Awake by Bill Willingham and Matthew Sturges.

Again I really enjoyed this story. I gave it 4* on Goodreads as I expected Briar Rose (Sleeping Beauty) to be a bit more bad ass than she was. Ali Barber finds himself awaking two girls, Briar Rose, and the Snow Queen through true loves kiss. As well as this the three of them are betrayed and find themselves in trouble when a nasty character from years ago reappears and challenges the Snow Queen to a fight.

I'm really happy with this months reading both in number and quality. There hasn't been one bad book this month and I think this has definitely been one of the better reading months of the year so far.

Now it's time for the award for Favourite July Read. And the winner is................

The Selection by Kiera Kass!!!

I can't wait to carry on with this series and find out how it ends. I will definitely be reading more of this series in August, if not completing it.

That's it for July and I will speak to you all in August!!!

Happy Reading!!!

Readathon - Fairest Wide Awake by Bill Willingham and Matthew Sturges

Hello Book Lovers!!!

The graffic novel I read during the readathon was Fairest Wide Awake by Bill Willingham and Matthew Sturges. This is the first volume in the Fairest series and I can't wait to carry on with it :)

This novel begins with Ali Barber. He finds a magic cup and discovers an imp living inside of it. The imp helps Ali Barber with his burglaries and soon he takes him to the place where Briar Rose (Sleeping Beauty) is lying. Ali Barber also notices another girl lying next to Briar Rose, an icey looking character which he decides to wake first through true loves kiss. Initially neither of the girls wake up but before long both have awoken.

Ali Barber and Briar Rose get taken to the other girl's (The Snow Queen's) ice palace where they stay but soon are betrayed and find themselves in a lot of danger when a nasty character from years ago reappears and challenges The Snow Queen to fight.

I really enjoyed reading this book and I can't wait to see how the story continues in the second volume which I also have so will be picking that up soon :)

I really liked all of the characters in this story but expected a bit more aggression from Briar Rose. The synopsis on the back of the book makes her sound like she's going to be a bad ass but I didn't really see much of that from her.

Other than that I really enjoyed the story and I think how it ended wasn't how you would expect it to end which takes away the princess tradition of 'and they all lived happily ever after'. I liked that about the story because it made it different and I hope we continue to get unexpected endings throughout the series.

I wouldn't recommend this to younger readers but if you're a mature reader and you like fairytales and action and adventure novels then definitely give this a read. You won't be disappointed!!!

Readathon - The Selection by Kiera Cass

Hello Book Lovers!!!

During the readathon I managed to read 1 book, and a graffic novel, as well as starting another book in the last couple of hours.

The first book I read was The Selection by Kiera Cass. The series was very hyped last year on booktube so I had high expectations. And I wasn't disappointed!!! I loved it!!!

The story revolves around America, a girl who lives as a Five. A Five is not the best kind of community to be in but not the worst either. America and her family find out that the Prince is holding a Selection to choose a girl to marry him so is inviting girls to apply. He then picks 35 girls to live in the palace with him where he will eventually narrow it down to 10 and start The Elite.

But America is already in love with Aspen, a Six. Nobody except America and Aspen know about this and so when America's mum asks her to apply for The Selection, she doesn't know what to do.

America eventually decides to apply and finds herself being selected for the final 35 to live at the palace. There she meets all of the other girls, most of which she likes, and Prince Maxon, which she soon grows to like. But she is in love with Aspen, so who does she choose and what happens if she gets chosen to be in The Elite?

I'm so glad I chose this book to read during the readathon as I loved every bit of it. It's not just about girls being selected to be the princess, but the palace having to fight against the Northerners and Southerners when they attack. Bringing action into the story gave it a lot more depth.

I also love the characters within this story, but I can't decided between Prince Maxon or Aspen which I like better. I think as it stands at the minute, I prefer Prince Maxon. Aspen has been a bit annoying and needs to stop confusing America with what he wants.

I definitely recommend this book to YA readers and I can't wait to start the second book in the series, The Elite.

24 Hour Readathon TBR

Wednesday 29 July 2015 0 comments
Hello Book Lovers!!!

This is going to be a slightly different post to usual but a one I'm super excited/slightly scared about. Tonight, in about 2 hours time, I've decided to challenge myself to see how much I can read in 24 hours. I've set this up myself as the readathons that are planned I never seem to be able to do due to other commitments.

So this post is to tell you what my options are for reading for the next 24 hours. I won't get all of these read but it gives me some options to choose from :)

The Selection Series by Kiera Cass

I've wanted to read this series since seeing it hyped on booktube last year but just haven't got around to it yet so I thought I would see how many of these I can read during the next 24 hours.

The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien

If you've read my LA TBR post then you'll know that I planned to read this while I was in LA but didn't get around to it.  My boyfriend is also doing this readathon and he also has The Hobbit so we would like to buddy read this when he has finished the book he is currently reading.

Fairest Wide Awake by Bill Willingham and Matthew Sturges
Fairest The Hidden Kingdom by Bill Willingham and Lauren Beukes

I thought that reading all books during the 24 hours might get rather tiring so I added two graffic novels to the list in case I need a break from reading books.

So that is it for my 24 Hour Readathon TBR and if you are crazy like me and want to join in with this then feel free and let me know what you plan on reading in the comments below :)

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen - Review

Tuesday 28 July 2015 0 comments

Hello Book Lovers!!!

I've finished Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, and when I eventually properly got into the story, I enjoyed it :)

This publication of the book gives an introduction discussing areas of the story such as characters and their development, hierarchies, writing style, political aspects etc. This was interesting to read as it gave me an insight into what to expect while reading this book. I think it helped me understand the writing style more when it came to reading the story.

This edition of the book is split into 3 volumes which I will now discuss in detail so spoilers are in the next section of this post.

Volume 1

This section begins with the Bennet family and their finding out of a Mr Bingley soon to be living in close proximity to them at Netherfield Park. Mrs Bennet instantly wants one of her daughters to marry Mr Bingley so when Mr Bennet pays a visit to Mr Bingley, the girls find themselves attending a ball where Mr Bingley will be present.

Mr Bingley takes interest in Jane Bennet, the eldest of the Bennet sisters, and dances with her at the ball. Also with Mr Bingley is Mr Darcy, an arrogant, self centred, proud man that refuses to dance with Elizabeth, the 2nd oldest Bennet sister, as he thinks she is not good enough for him.

Mr Darcy however, after several weeks, finds himself becoming more intrigued by Elizabeth while Jane is also becoming a lot closer to Mr Bingley. Jane visits the Bingley mansion but finds herself caught in a downpour that makes her fall ill, forcing her to stay at the mansion with Mr Bingley. Elisabeth goes to visit Jane and Miss Bingley begins to dislike how much attention Mr Darcy seems to be paying to Elizabeth.

When the girls return home, they find Mr Collins, a clergyman, visiting their home. Mr Collins wishes to inherit the Bennet property after Mr Bennet passes away, as it can only be passed down to a male, and as all of the Bennet children are girls, there is nobody to pass it down to.

Soon after his visit, Mr Collins proposes to Elizabeth but she refuses him and eventually Mr Collins leaves Elizabeth alone and finds himself getting engaged to Charlotte Lucas, the Bennet's next door neighbour.

Meanwhile the girls have become friendly with the officers of a town nearby. Among them is Wickham who is friendly towards Elizabeth. He tells her how Mr Darcy cheated him out of an inheritance.

The Bingleys and Mr Darcy soon return to London and as winter approaches, Jane visits the city to see friends, and hoping to see Mr Bingley. Miss Bingley pays Jane a visit however, and is very rude to her.

Volume 2

In the spring, Elizabeth visits Charlotte who lives near Mr Collins' patron, Lady Catherine de Bourgh, who is Mr Darcy's aunt. Mr Darcy pays many visits to Lady Catherine, therefore seeing Elizabeth during this time frequently.

Darcy eventually makes a proposal to Elizabeth but Elizabeth refuses. Darcy leaves but soon after gives Elizabeth a letter to which she reads and discovers that Wickham is a liar and that the disagreement was due to Wickham wanting to run away with Mr Darcy's sister to get married.

This letter makes Elizabeth rethink her feeling for Mr Darcy and she goes on another trip with relatives to Pemberley which is Mr Darcy's estate. She visits only when she knows that Mr Darcy is away and hears from his servants that he is a fantastic master. Mr Darcy returns and asks for Elizabeth to meet his sister.

Volume 3

A letter arrives at home stating that Lydia and Wickham have eloped and are nowhere to be found. This could mean that they are living together out of wedlock which would bring disgrace to the family. Mr Gardiner and Mr Bennett go looking for Lydia but Mr Bennett comes back home empty handed.

Mr Gardiner writes a letter home after saying that they have been found and Wickham will marry Lydia in exchange for an annual income. The Bennett's believed that Mr Gardiner paid off Wickham but soon find out that the source of money was actually Mr Darcy.

Lydia and Wickham return married and Mr Bennett gives them the cold shoulder. They shortly leave for the North of England. Bingley returns and resumes his courtship of Jane. Mr Darcy goes to stay with them but does not mention his secret proposal to Elizabeth which she refused.

Bingley proposes to Jane which pleases everyone except Bingley's sister. While celebrations are underway, Lady Catherine de Bourgh visits and speaks to Elizabeth about hearing that Mr Darcy, her nephew, is planning to marry her. But Lady Catherine does not think a Bennett is suitable for her nephew and tells Elizabeth she has to refuse his proposal.

Soon after Mr Darcy and Elizabeth go for a walk and he tells her that his feelings are still the same from the spring time and once again proposes to her. Elizabeth realises that the feelings are mutual and this time accepts his proposal and the two are married as well as Jane and Bingley.

Overall I enjoyed the story once I got used to the writing style. As this was written many many years ago, the language is very different to what we use today so this sometimes lost me and I had to refer back to the synopsis to link back to what I was reading.

Once I had passed this stage, I began to enjoy the story more and felt I knew the characters a lot more. This helped me understand what they were going through and how they were feeling in different situations during this novel.

Although I liked some of the characters such as Jane and Bingley, I found some of the characters like Elizabeth and Lydia quite annoying at times. I felt that Elizabeth did nothing but complain most of the time and Lydia was too wrapped up in her love story to care about anyone else.

As for Mr Darcy that everyone seems to love, I didn't actually think much of him.....Don't hate me!!! I just felt like her could have had more personality and his character was very flat at times. I know that he is proud and can be rather stuck up at times, but I really just wanted him to loosen up a bit!!! He did near the end of the story when he got married to Elizabeth but up until then, I just wanted him to smile!!!

Finally, I do understand to an extent to why this particular classic is so hyped, but I don't see why everyone seems to love Mr Darcy so much.

Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Hello Book Lovers!!!

The next book I'm reading this month is Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. It's been quite a while since I read a classic so I thought it was time to read another one :) This is obviously a very well known classic and a lot of the time very hyped, so I knew I definitely wanted to give it a read at some point to see what all of the fuss is about. I also haven't seen any of the film adaptations so this is a completely new story for me to read :)

Happy Reading!!!

Looking For Alaska by John Green - Review

Friday 17 July 2015 0 comments

Hello Book Lovers!!!

I've finished Looking For Alaska by John Green and I really enjoyed it :) It has definitely lived up to it's hype and I hope it is made into a film like The Fault in Our Stars and PaperTowns

This book is about a boy called Miles who goes away to school and lives in a dorm room with another boy called Chip while he's there. Chip and Miles become friends very quickly and Chip ensures Miles is comfortable with his surroundings as Miles struggles with social situations as he has been a bit of a Wallflower in his previous schools.

Also living in the dorms is Alaska, a girl who is very hard to work out. One minute she can be super happy and bubbly, and the next minute she is the complete opposite; angry, emotional etc.

Miles takes a liking to Alaska very quickly but unfortunately for Miles, Alaska has a boyfriend.

Miles, Chip, Alaska, and their group of friends go through school together, getting into trouble for smoking on school property, not going to class etc. Although they have their differences, the group are tight and they support each other through thick and thin.

But one day their lives changed dramatically through a tragedy they never seen coming...

That's all I'm going to say about the synopsis as I really don't want to spoil anything for you. I definitely recommend you pick this book up and give it a read. It really makes you think about how much we take for granted in our lives.

I loved all of the characters in this book, like I always do with John Green's characters, and the story kept me very engaged the whole way through. I definitely think that if I wasn't so busy all the time I could read this book in one sitting.

John Green's character dialogue is always spot on as well. He makes the characters speak just like we do in real life. You can truly see the characters speaking to each other in the way John Green writes their dialogue.

Looking For Alaska gave me all the feels. I laughed so much but then a couple of pages later I could be close to tears. I can never fully gage where his stories are going to take us and I think that is what I find exciting about reading his work.

Dream a Little Dream by Giovanna Fletcher - Review

Monday 13 July 2015 0 comments

Hello Book Lovers!!!

I managed to read half of Dream a Little Dream by Giovanna Fletcher while I was on holiday and then finished it off once I got home. I really enjoyed this book although not as much a Billy and Me.

This story follows Sarah, a woman who works for the worst boss ever and not only that, but she is sick of her single life. She starts to dream about a boy named Brett who she knew vaguely in college through another one her friends.

These dreams aren't just normal dreams where he happens to just be in the dream randomly, she is having romantic dreams about this boy who she hardly knows and hasn't seen in years.

One day at work Sarah asks for a promotion as she feels she has been with the company long enough but also feels she can do more than make coffee for her boss. Her boss tells her that they are opening up another spot in the development department of the company, where she will be able to bring forward her ideas about knew TV programmes they could potentially create. Sarah gets the position but soon finds out that there is another knew member on the team.

Sarah has no idea who this person could be but when she walks in and see's Brett who she has been dreaming about, she doesn't know how to respond. After a while she gets used to the idea of having Real Brett at work and Dream Brett at home although this is something she does still find completely strange.

As the story continues, romance starts to grow between Brett and Sarah but they face issues along the way.

I really enjoyed this book but didn't feel too attached to the characters. I felt like I wanted to know more about the real Brett as well as I didn't feel like I knew him even at the end. I did like the story line though and I liked how we got snippets of Sarah's dreams throughout the book. I would recommend this to older readers as there is some content in here that isn't really suitable for younger readers.

Papertowns by John Green - Review

Hello Book Lovers!!!

I'm back from LA and it was incredible!!! I read one and a half books while on holiday which isn't as much as I hoped to but I was so busy while there I didn't have all that much time for reading. So the first review I'm posting is Papertowns by John Green. I read this while on the plane to LA and thoroughly enjoyed it :)

This novel is about a boy called Quentin (Q) and a girl called Margo. They have grown up together as they are neighbours and for a long time now Q has had a crush on Margo. Margo on the other hand hasn't shown any more interest than just being friends.

Margo is an interesting character in both how she thinks and acts in certain scenarios. Q is a normal boy that goes to school and has a crush on a girl.

Q and Margo discovered something when they were younger and they both acted very differently to their finding. It is brought back up in the book on a few occasions and by the end, you start to understand why Margo is how she is and how what they found when they were younger has impacted on who she has become.

When Margo disappears suddenly, Q and his friends go on a roadtrip to find her. Not knowing where she is or whether she is dead or alive, the group go out looking for her hoping that she is well.

It was nice to see Margo come out of her shell and show the real her at the end of the story. She has been pretending to be someone she is not and so when she finally showed who she is and let us know what she wanted in her life, I felt I knew who Margo was a lot more.

I can't decide what I think about the ending; I liked it but it wasn't how I expected it to end. It really put into perspective that life can suddenly change quite dramatically whether that be for better or for worse. I just don't know whether the ending was for better or for worse.

I love John Green's writing style and I love how even when he's writing about serious topics, he can still include lots of humour and his characters are always so likeable. I'm really looking forward to reading Looking For Alaska soon.
